Great Blue Heron

A great blue heron in Huntley Meadow Park.

Ever seen a great blue heron in a tree? Neither have I.

Ever seen one perch on a branch on one foot?

It’s a remarkably well-proportioned bird. Its legs are long enough to keep it well out of the marshy water, while its neck and bill are just long enough to pluck out whatever may be in the water under it.

While it might be properly apportioned for feeding in marshes, it sure does look goofy while flying. Usually its head is more in an S shape, but this guy was only flying from his perch in the tree to the marsh below.
