Eagles at Conowingo Dam

I recently made the long drive to Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River, based on the recommendation from Peter, the birdwatcher I wrote about before. It’s claimed hold the highest concentration of bald eagles east of the Mississippi. But such is my luck: I only saw one bald eagle, and then only fleetingly. He seemed to be building his nest in a large electrical pylon out on an island about 100 yards into the river. Here’re some of the shots I got of him.

Flying south over the river, toward the trees to pick up more nesting material.

Banking in the sunshine.

South again over the river.

Here he is bringing his nesting material to his nest, which can just be seen on the platform of the pylon.

Bonus: Not the best picture, but here’s a juvenile bald eagle that I was barely able to catch.

Second bonus! Great blue heron colony. Lots of these guys were hanging out on the island out in the middle of the river.
