Skeksis! (i.e. Black Vultures)

Ok, not really Skeksis. But possibly just as terrifying. Especially when the swoop down on you, like this one did.

Easiest way to tell black vultures apart from turkey vultures is their head color. Turkey vultures have those distinctive red heads.

Some more field marks: their white legs and white feathers.

When I arrived at Conowingo Dam before sunrise with the expectation of seeing bald eagles, I saw a couple dozen raptors soaring in the pre-dawn blackness above me. I got very excited, only to be disappointed as the sun revealed them to be these scavengers rather than my quarry, the national raptor.

My car and I made it out in one piece, despite the skeksis’ best efforts.
